Junior Achievement of South Central PA

Junior Achievement of South Central PA

A is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades k-12 about work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship through experiential, hands-on programs. Junior Achievement’s purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.

Junior Achievement of South Central PA reached over 33,000 students last year with the help of over 1,200 volunteers. Our volunteers come from all walks of life including business people, college students, parents and retirees. Our office celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.

JA’s in-class and hands-on programs lay the foundation for students to practice wise financial habits, reinforce the importance of education and encourage entrepreneurial thinking. Activities build upon one another and focus on topics including the importance of the roles of workers in the community, roles people play in the local economy, saving money, various careers, budgeting and financial decision making skills.

Our funding is provided by local businesses, foundations and individuals.

American Red Cross

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross empowers ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts in emergency situations. We train. We mobilize. We connect donors and volunteers to those in urgent need of a helping hand. Whether it is a hurricane or a heart attack; a call for blood or a call for help, the Red Cross is there, providing life-changing services throughout Central Pennsylvania.

Red Cross provides vital services 365 days a year—from responding to home fires to teaching first aid and CPR to community groups. We’re able to provide these services thanks to thousands of dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our donors. The American Red Cross puts these donations to good use—we are proud to tell donors that we invest an average of 91 cents of every dollar in humanitarian services and programs, well above the industry standard.

How do we do it? By practicing what we preach: preparedness. We train our volunteers. We plan ahead for the types of disasters that strike in our community. And we train individuals, businesses and community groups so that they too can be prepared.

Every single donation brings hope. The Red Cross of South Central PA is a channel for the compassion of caring individuals and partners for people in need.

Friendship Hockey Exchange

Friendship Hockey Exchange

Mr. Paul Pelland from Lancaster, PA and Mr. John Beith from Kitchener, Ontario were traveling on business when they began to talk and realized they had several things in common including their involvement in youth hockey programs back home. After their flight, Paul invited John and his hockey team to Lancaster Pennsylvania for a weekend of hockey and friendship. It is from these first hockey games in 1972 that The Friendship Hockey Exchange was born. Now, every February the Canadians travel here for a weekend of hockey, fun, and friendship; and, in March we make the trek to Canada for the same weekend of fun!

The exchange consists of three very important components.

SPORT:
The players learn the importance of sportsmanship and the true enjoyment one can receive when playing Hockey or any sport for fun.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE:
The tours and activities planned by the committee educate everyone (players and parents), not only on facts and points of interest, but on the two countries and their cultures.

FRIENDSHIP!
Our billeting process (hosting a family in your home) catapults a friendship that last beyond two quick weekends. The highways between Kitchener and Lancaster have been well traveled.
